Exactly who is the enemy we are fighting in iraq?

who are the insurgents? aren't saddam and his family destroyed. haven't we eliminated any wmd that might have been there? isn't it the consensus that bin laden is elsewhere? why hasn't the us military already defeated whoever is the enemy? if resources are the problem why haven't we already provided them. we have spent trillions and nothing to show for it?
